A late afternoon and early evening fishing at Barry Docks. Fished from 4.00 pm until about 7.30 pm.
Not on the bus today, decided to opt for the train which gives me a bit more time fishing. Journey time from Newport to Barry Docks railway station is about 1 hour 10 minutes and a 10-minute easy walk from the railway station down to the waterfront. The cost was just £7.60 returned on a Saturday.
Barry Docks definitely seem to be an evening fishing spot. There was a lot more fish activity which started at about 5.30 pm. I think I’ll have to really look at train times to see how late I can stay there. The fish was really beginning to get active just as I was packing away the gear.
I started the session on 6-inch Senko-type stick work, simply free casting it without weight. Reeled in at a moderate speed to keep the worm at about 6 to 8 inches below the surface. That was the depth that small bait fish and fry were swimming.
The wacky stick worm I used comes in a pack of 5, measures 155mm (6.1 inches) and weighs 11g. Purchase at Tackle King https://tackleking.co.uk/wackystick
I then moved on to a 3-inch paddle tail shad on a 1/4 once jig hook. I saw 3 pretty decent size fish swimming along the dock but none took interest in the bait. A family fishing on the next jetty up bought in a nice conger eel that looked to be about 2 feet long.
I’m hoping that the train will allow me to stay later because I’m sure that things were going to get more active a little later. Unfortunately, to make the last bus to Newport from Cardiff I would have to leave Barry Docks at about 8.30 pm.
Hopefully, there are later trains so I can stay until at least 9.30 pm before heading back. But a really enjoyable 4-hour session over the late afternoon and early evening.
