Testing out top pour gummy baits

A fabulous day out at Barry Docks fishing. I headed there to test the homemade crab flavour gummy baits. Sadly ended up getting bass fever and spending time on soft lures trying to get them to bite.

The main aim of today’s fishing session at Barry Docks was to try out the crab flavour gummy baits. The top pour mould bait lasted for 9 casts before falling off the hook but I think that was because of being dragged through a patch of seaweed. One of the things to remember about gummy baits is that they are not as strong as soft plastics and do not like being hauled through weeds – the hook will tear through the body if it gets hung up on anything. At least as the bait is totally biodegradable within a few days you are not leaving plastic lying on the bed of the water.

The gummy baits lasted well until I ended the testing to turn my attention to the bass. The lure fishing with the gummy bait did attract the attention of at least 1 mullet but it did not take the bite. The sea fishing rod baits lasted a few hours on the hook. Not sure that was the best type of fishing for the docks but it did test the ability of the gummy baits to hold on to the hook in the water.

After seeing the bass swim by while having a coffee break I opted to change the gummy baits for soft plastics lures. Had a couple of near misses on both bass and mullet. I’m sure the location of where I fished today at the docks made a real difference.

I’ll head further down the dock next time to see if the fish really are in the bottom half of the docks.

An enjoyable 7 hours session – even though I had originally aimed to do just 4 hours.
