Taking a recce for fishing neap tides at St Brides Newport

This video is a recce of sea fishing at St Brides in Newport, South Wales on a neap tide of 9.5m. It is part of the bus Stop Fishing series of videos on our Youtube Channel.

I was planning on going fishing there but I was told by a local angler that St Brides is useless for fishing on tides of less than 12m. How wrong they were. There are plenty of locations to fish at St Brides on a low neap tide.

If you are parking at the Lighthouse Inn car park then the best locations for fishing on neap tides is by turning left at the steps. Along the shore there are a number of good locations for fishing on neap tides. The best ones are at the groynes. These can be found at about 10 minutes, 15 minutes and 20 minutes walk from the car park steps.

The fist groyne, the largest, is probably the best location as there is a small beach area and only a small section of boulders to clamber over to get there. But all the groyne areas have fishable locations on 9.5m tides and below.

To the left of the steps the boulder protection wall is also less steep and easier to cross than if you turn right. The path to the left is also pretty smooth and level. It is easy to pull a tackle trolley on.

To the right of the car park steps there are just a couple of areas that are fishable on low neap tides. The first one can be found at the wooden piles where there is a set of steps that lead through the erosion defence wall of boulders. The second one is a fair size beach that is only accessable on tides of 9.5m and below.

To get to that beach you need to clamber over some rocks and is best done by people who are good on their feet and only fishing with light tackle.

The video above show the best location for fishing at St Brides, Newport on a 9.5m neap tide.

In conclusion, I would say that St Brides is fishable on a neap tide. It may fish better on a higher tide but it is certainly not unfishable on tides of 9.5 and below. You just need to find the locations that gets you down to the water.

Pewrsonally I was really annoyed that I did not take my fishing rods with me as it was perfect conditions for some sea bass fishing.

As part of the Bus Stop Fishing Series, I obviously arrived at St Brides by bus from Newport. St Brides is covered by thev DRT31 service. The Newport Bus DRT service is a ‘demand repsonsive transport’ service that covers the more rural areas of Newport. You need to book this at least a day in advance. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to arrive at the Lighthouse Inn car park.

I’ll be using other Newport Bus DRT services in the future when I head off fishing at Redwick and other locations.
