It’s a bank holiday Monday so I wanted to test out going fishing at Barry Docks using the Sunday service on the bus.
Pretty straightforward and easy but the biggest disadvantage was that on Sundays and Bank Holidays, the first bus to Cardiff is at 9.30 am from Newport. With a 2 hour 20 minute trip, it means the earliest to start fishing at Barry Docks is about 11.45 am – most of the morning is gone. It takes a little bit longer to get to Barry Docks on bank holidays because buses run an hourly service rather than the 20-minute or 30-minute timetables for weekday services.
The buses used were:
- Newport to Cardiff – 30
- Cardiff to Barry Docks – 94
I think the best option for fishing at Barry Docks on Sundays and Bank Holidays is using the train from Newport to Barry Docks. The first trains leave at approx 7.40 am on a Sunday and with a change at Cardiff Central it’s just over 1 hour. There’s a 10-minute easy walk from Barry Docks Railway Station to the waterfront.
Sadly today was a wet, cold and miserable day, not made any better by being devoid of bites and fish. That said it was an enjoyable time spent lure fishing and drop-shot fishing.
One of the things I noticed today was that most of the other anglers that came down to fish at the docks were lure fishing and they were concentrating their efforts at the edge and the walls of the piers. Few were casting out very far. Something to remember in the future.
