First time fishing at Barry Docks

My first visit to Barry Docks for fishing using the bus and public transport. Not a great start with the buses and ending up using the train. But despite the issues with buses (they are not normally as bad) I had a great day out lure fishing. There is the option of the bus and for those over 60’s in Wales, the travel is free. The other option is the train from Newport to Barry Docks which takes about an hour. That makes it about half the travel time. There is a 10-minute easy walk from Barry Docks Station to the docks themselves. The cost is very reasonable at £7.20 return.

Both buses and trains operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays – though with restricted service.

But normally a 2-hour trip from Newport to Barry Docks using the following buses.

  • Newport to Cardiff – number 30
  • Cardiff to Morrisons, Barry – either number 304, 94 or 95.

A great day out despite the wind and I’ll definitely be heading back on a regular basis. The best thing about Barry Docks is that there is always fishable water and no need to worry about tides.

The Fishing in Wales website has the following fish species that have been caught in the docks.:

  • bass,
  • conger,
  • whiting,
  • cod,
  • mullet and
  • pollack

I had a solid bite towards the end of the session but did not land anything However there is definitely fish in the dock and last week a decent-sized bass had been landed.

As you are fishing from solid structures it is a good place to go if you are disabled and use a wheelchair. Lots of free parking along the docks.

Some of the local residents said that lure fishing produces the best results at the docks. I can see this becoming a regular site for fishing especially as the docks are enclosed and I don’t need to worry about tide times.
