Coronation Park Fishing Closure River Usk Newport

Coronation Park is a great place for tidal fishing on the River Usk in Newport. But it’s due to close this month to allow a major flood management scheme to be built.

It is expected to close at the start of March for about 18 months. The public footpath that leads to the river has been detoured and will be closed to allow the safe operation of construction.

This adds to the restrictions already in place, especially parking, on Stephenson Street at the Newport Transporter Bridge. Much of the road is closed due to a major refurbishment of the bridge.

Once the works are completed it should be a major enhancement of the park especially down by the playing fields and football grounds. The access to the river should remain open after the works and fishing should be possible again.

Coronation Park is one of the best locations in central Newport for sea fishing on the tidal River Usk. It is regularly a location for fishing competitions of local clubs. Although only temporary, the closure will have a major impact on fishing in Newport as this was probably the easiest location to access. It is also probably the only location in central Newport with a sufficient river bank to allow club competitions.

With 18 months set aside for work, it will probably be re-opening in the Autumn of 2024.
