Scouting Monkey Island for fishing in Newport

A quick trip out to scout a potential new fishing location on the River Usk in Newport. Monkey Island is an outcrop of land in Lliswerry and is at a confluence of the main River Usk and a pill.

There’s not a lot of space for fishing here though it is regularly used for tidal river fishing. I’ve not fished here previously so thought I’d head out on the ebike to see what the potential is.

There is good access for cycles along the main spine of the island though it is rather overgrown and rough to get down to the river. It’s not really suitable for wheelchairs if you are disabled.

I headed down at low tide to check on the state of the riverbed and it looks pretty good. There was nothing really notable to snag on and so should produce some good fishing.

It might take a bit of heaving and pushing to get the ebike down to the river’s edge but it certainly looks like the effort will be worthwhile. The island is just upstream of the Transporter Bridge and accessed by a ramp on the Western Orbital bridge.

I’ve seen a few people fishing off the island in the past but I’m not sure how busy it gets. The main path along the top of the island is generally used by dog walkers. I would not recommend fishing under or close to the Western Orbital Bridge, it seems to be the place for kids to go smoke some weed and have a drink. But towards the end of the island seems to be pretty quiet.
