First time fishing off Newport River Usk walkway

It’s one of the few places for accessible fishing in Newport if you want to go tidal fishing. The riverwalk way offers a couple of locations just past the Octopus Cafe that is perfectly suited for wheelchairs and disabled people with mobility problems. These locations are a couple of rest/social areas that are just off the walkway itself. This makes them easier to cast from as the walk itself can be very busy.

Best fished on a higher tide due to the height of the platform over the water. The marks offer some good fishing depending on the time of the year. They are not too far upstream of the Transporter Bridge, so anything you can catch at the Transporter Bridge mark should be catchable here.

Expect the normal winter flounder, conga eel, bass, and whiting.

Parking is not too difficult in East Dock Road and then cut through the apartments onto the walkway and the platforms. From a safety perspective, I would not recommend fishing late into the evening much after dark. The area is known to attract some of the ‘more colourful’ characters of Newport.

It’s not a particularly well-used fishing mark in Newport so chances are you will find a place here if you turn up. It’s not too snaggy and so your tackle is going to be relatively safe. That said this is still in the centre of Newport and so you may find shopping trolleys and other snags dumped in the river.

The over place on the river walkway where I’ve seen people fishing is up by the theatre car park in the centre of Newport and at the big red work of art. This is quite a busy area and so you need to be careful when casting. There are also lots of opportunities to get snagged up. Lots of things get dumped in the river at this location so best to stay away.

But I’ve spent a few pleasant days fishing from the River Usk walk at Newport. The platforms are a perfect location, they keep you away from the main pedestrian traffic on the walk and make a good solid location to cast from.

I would say this is probably the best place in Newport for tidal sea fishing on the river if you have mobility issues and are restricted to a wheel chair of mobility scooter. Parking is not too far away on East Dock Street.
